Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
